Tradition and modernity in harmony

Housing estate Mattenhof – Zurich (CH)

The Mattenhof estate, built in 1946, was getting on in years. Instead of renovating it, a completely new replacement estate was built in two stages. Tradition and modernity come together here, as on the one hand the garden city style of the old estate was retained. On the other hand, the residential complexes were equipped with state-of-the-art technology, including B.E.G. occupancy and motion detectors.

The staircases of the apartment blocks are integrated into the KNX building system. In order to increase energy efficiency and save material costs, the motion detectors are set up on each floor using the master-slave method. The inexpensive slave detector only supplies the movement information to the master device. This is installed in the darkest part of the corridor and measures the brightness value on site. If movement is detected and the brightness is too low, the master detector switches on the light for the floor. When residents use the stairs, the lights are activated when they enter each floor. If no more movement is detected on a floor within the follow-up time stored in the detector, the respective master switches the light off again. This means that light is only activated where it is really needed.

Conventional detectors are installed in the entrance areas. These also switch the light when movement is detected, so that the path is safely illuminated. Around 460 different B.E.G. Detectors with detection ranges of up to 24 meters are in operation in Mattenhof.
