What could be more exciting than fashion? It is an expression of the spirit of the times, social status and personality. The Belgian town of Hasselt has dedicated a museum to the history of fashion and contemporary designers. Alongside illustrious international names such as Chanel, Lanvin, Yves Saint Laurent and Versace, the works of Belgian designers Martin Margiela and Raf Simons are also celebrated here. Visitors can view a selection from the main collection, which now comprises over 18,000 items. The permanent exhibition is complemented every six months by interesting temporary exhibitions.

Lighting in a fashion museum deserves special attention. Exclusive one-off pieces and the finest materials require particular protection. How can we ensure that the right lighting showcases valuable haute couture, occasion wear and prêt-à-porter, and highlights the beauty of the exhibits? How can simple reprogramming or adaptation of the lighting conditions be guaranteed when exhibitions are regularly redesigned? The City of Hasselt, as the museum operator, was interested in a modern, flexible and energy-efficient lighting control system that could be implemented with as little renovation work as possible. To this end, they turned to the lighting control specialist B.E.G. Brück Electronic GmbH The Belgian B.E.G. team equipped the exhibition rooms and corridors of the Fashion Museum with B.E.G. DALI-LINK sensors.To enhance modularity, some of the detector and push-button modules (PB BLE) were mounted on rails. Administrative, sanitary, storage and basement areas were fitted with low-cost switch-type detectors.

What are the advantages of DALI control?

Simply by using presence detectors and integrating the DALI bus system, energy consumption for lighting can be reduced by up to 60%. Energy efficiency is a key factor in the cost-effective operation of a museum. The historic building in the centre of Hasselt contains many rooms and corridors that connect the various themed areas. When these areas are not in use, there is no need for lighting. Switching off the lights or dimming them to a prescribed, low-intensity orientation light is then sufficient. The ‘orientation light’ function, which can be activated, remains active after the last detected movement and the expiry of the set delay time. It limits the maximum dimming level of the connected luminaires to an adjustable value. This ensures that safety-critical areas are never completely dark, thereby saving energy compared to full illumination. It is also possible to limit the duration of the orientation lighting. At the Hasselt Museum, even the adjustable orientation lighting was in some cases too bright for the exhibits. However, our team found a solution: a single luminaire is dimmed to a minimum as a separate group, regardless of movement, as soon as the power is switched on via the main switch. Significant energy savings through presence-dependent lighting control in the rest of the rooms can be achieved, for example, using B.E.G. Brück Electronic GmbH sensors such as the PD4N-DALI-LINK. Outside opening hours, the lighting is switched off completely to further reduce standby power consumption. The savings achieved by the museum can be measured by installing a DALI-LINK relay with an operating hours counter. This also allows lights to be replaced at an early stage once their maximum operating life has been reached.

The investment is certainly worthwhile for the museum, as, in addition to reducing energy costs, DALI control can also extend the lifespan of the LED luminaires. The costs of the installation are therefore quickly recouped. The DALI bus system elevates the museum’s lighting to a higher, extremely comfortable level of well-being. This begins as soon as the lights are switched on, when the luminaires dim up simultaneously via a soft start, which is gentle on the eyes. The ability to adjust each luminaire individually means that the room and exhibits are quickly bathed in the desired lighting atmosphere. For particularly delicate materials, the luminaires were set to illuminate the exhibit at a maximum of 40% of the possible illuminance, for example, to prevent damage to the materials. An adjustable fade-in time ensures smooth transitions. When several devices are grouped together, the digital nature of DALI allows changes to be made via software.

B.E.G. DALI-LINK enables easy integration into buildings. It also allows multiple rooms to be systematically equipped at the same time. There are two modes of operation. In a KNX-controlled building, the system – which is specifically designed for lighting control – is connected to KNX. At the Hasselt Museum, B.E.G. DALI-LINK is used as a multi-room solution via the Bluetooth interface in the push-button module.

Operating and adjusting the lighting is very straightforward via a user-friendly app. The B.E.G. Bluetooth app includes a secure area through which the installer/integrator can configure the DALI-LINK components. All devices and their settings can be automatically queried and displayed in the app.

End users can activate standard scenes at any time and create, name and save their own scenes. Furthermore, the lighting can be switched on and dimmed conventionally using push-buttons as required. Data can be shared and backed up via email, a messaging service or the organisation’s own cloud. Storing device parameters in a database is very practical: if the museum curator later decides to repeat an identical arrangement of the exhibits, the settings can be easily restored.

B.E.G. took charge of the intensive training of the responsible operators; among others, technicians from the City of Hasselt, the installer, staff from the design office, the co-contractor and the Fashion Museum learnt everything about the operation and handling of the system from the B.E.G. experts.
